I think a lot of people (including me initially) overlook how great DiCaprio's performance is in this scene and the scene before. How you can see how Rick Dalton is moved that he finally did something right, he finally got some respect. You can see how not used to this he is, how much it means to him and you literally see how the expression changes in his eyes from that of surprised joy to a kind of inner, subjective reflection of OK, at long last I finally did something right, I finally succeeded at least at something. This and the scene before where DiCaprio had to act like he forgot his lines, but still tried to stay emotionally in the scene, but couldn't because he's pissed off at himself - it's one of the best pieces of acting DiCaprio has ever done and it's probably what will earn him another Oscar nomination. And it's all the more impressive considering he himself has never experienced failure like this - he was always lauded and respected since his early acting days, he is the exact opposite of a loser and yet he absolutely nails the emotions of someone who feels like an overlooked piece of crap that gets no respect. A hell of an actor.
